Rise in Free VoIP Services
In this COVID-19 pandemic, so many of VoIP services have started offering their premium packages for free, just to cater to rise in demand of VoIP services.
This rise may be temporary but it sure has changed the way people are conducting business now, from the comfort of their home.
After pandemic shut down all non essential services, companies were forced and encouraged to let their employees work from home. This approach although should get things done, has also highlighted other problems that how we as human operate in a professional environment. Our tasks are not just dependable on us but also on other teams and their ability to effectively deliver this task on time and efficiently.
Work from home has really changed our mindset in regards to how to do things while not working together in the same room. Naturally this has created gaps in our perspective in dealing with different situations thus resulting in misunderstanding and inefficiency.
To overcome this challenge companies have turned to VoIP services such as Zoom, Skype for business, Google meet etc.
These VoIP companies sensing opportunities also started to market themselves as best solution for companies and firms as the second best solution for working together, going as far as giving their premium packages for free.
This trend soon caught the attention of another group of people who had expertise in not so ethical field such as black hat hacking.
These people started to mine and attack such VoIP services resulting in major embarrassment for VoIP company such as Zoom. Zoom hack which was later called as Zoom bombing in which hackers were able to enter dedicated meeting rooms and record the conversation or bomb their meeting with pornographic materials gain much attention in the media.
At first Zoom response was that this was an online malign campaign against them, however, after multiple big shot publishers including forbes and Wire went after them, Zoom realizing their technical flaw and below average security, took steps to protect their user privacy and online security.
While Zoom did initially was unstoppable was now facing a hurdle, their online hacked attempt prompted many companies to seek out alternate Free VoIP services. Sensing opportunity a lot of companies jumped in from whatsapp increasing their group video call from 4 to 8 and Google meet making their product completely free for everyone to use
Whatsapp and Google being a household brand have much more trust in their privacy from the user base as compared to Zoom, whether they actually have the technical capability to provide user safety is another question itself, only time will tell.
However, it is noted here that while this pandemic has eroded a lot of people's livelihood it has also created opportunities for some companies. Now it up to the business community to make the best out of this outcome while being emphatic towards their employees and customers.
