Should we even care about Email Tracking?
To understand what I am referring to, we first have understand what do I mean by Email tracking?
Email Tracking
As per wikipedia:
Email tracking is a method for monitoring the delivery of email messages to the intended recipient. Most tracking technologies use some form of digitally time-stamped record to reveal the exact time and date that an email was received or opened, as well the IP address of the recipient.
Email tracking is useful when the sender wants to know if the intended recipient actually received the email, or if they clicked the links. However, due to the nature of the technology, email tracking cannot be considered an absolutely accurate indicator that a message was opened or read by the recipient.
Most email marketing software provides tracking features, sometimes in aggregate (e.g., click-through rate), and sometimes on an individual basis.
Now that we have understood what email tracking is, I want to raise a point regarding it. We as human beings are entitled to basic rights, and one of those basic rights is our right to privacy.
Email tracking which was already in a gray area as it gives the sender the option to know whether the email has been opened or not, even to the point whether the person receiving the email has clicked anything else or not, in my eyes is simply breach of privacy.
I understand most marketers are after this option, however by reading this article on wired, which states how much marketers are exploiting, or are able to gain access to private information just by tracking our email.
This has been an eye opener for me, as now I am more inclined towards protecting my email address from such marketers.
So I started searching for how to use my email without getting tracked on my every step.
How to Block Email Tracking
I found a good resource on How to Block Email Tracking, which I believe can be helpful to all the readers here present.
In short, there are some manual approaches you can take or you end trusting other 3rd party companies to keep your information private and safe, hopefully as this is their bread and butter I expect they can live upto to it.
